Prescription orthotics look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom-made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes – they reduce the stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. Orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortable as an insole, and are made specifically for you.
Custom-made orthotics help to restore the normal balance and alignment of your body by gently correcting foot abnormalities; reducing problems associated with pressure points, muscle strain and abnormal forces on the ankles, knees, hips and spine. Orthotics will help you get relief from fatigue and pain, allowing you to enjoy your daily activities once again.
Custom Knee Brace
We exclusively provide Breg knee braces
which is one of the leading knee brace manufacturers.
As a physiotherapist, I understand that sometimes our clients can benefit from a brace to help with knee related injuries. While rehabilitation is always recommended, a custom knee brace can play a significant role in helping the patient return back to daily activities, sports, work, or to help manage symptoms before or after a surgical procedure.
Braces are no longer bulky, ugly or continuously slide down your leg. They are lighter, stronger and more effective in offloading or protecting your knee. They are significantly slimmer and can be worn under clothing (trousers, pants, etc.) and come in a wide variety of colours.
A custom knee brace is measured and made specifically for your knee. It can help unload an area of the joint (eg. Osteoarthritis), or provide the joint with stability (see conditions below).
Common conditions that braces are used for:
Knee ligament injuries (eg. ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)
Meniscal instabilities (eg. Medial and lateral menisci tears)
Total Knee Replacements
The Bregs Custom DUO (Dynamic Unloading Osteoarthritis) brace is the only dual upright dynamic OA brace on the market.
This brace creates a load across the joint when the knee is straight and reduces the load as the knee flexes. Thus, when the patient is bearing weight, the brace is actively working. The DUO reduces force when sitting making it ideal for patients who need to wear a brace for daily activities.
Studies show that the unloader braces diminish pain, increase walking tolerance, provide better function and may delay the need for knee replacement surgery.
Categories of knee braces:
- Unloading knee braces are designed to provide pain relief for OA sufferers & meniscal injuries by reducing the weight on the affected knee compartment
- Ligament Instability Braces help stabilize and protect the knee joint. They are commonly used for sports injuries, before/after surgical procedures for ligament/ meniscal instabilities.
- The Patellofemoral knee brace is specifically designed for patients with recurrent patella subluxations and dislocations by holding the patella in its proper position
At Hitchon’s physiotherapy, we will help find the best brace that works for you.
